The Doors Keyboard Player Passes Away
In a week already tinged with sadness for the music industry, it is with great sadness that we report the death of yet another music industry giant, Ray Manzarek, keyboard player with legendary band The Doors. He passed away today (20th May) at the RoMed Clinic in Rosenheim, Germany after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Manzarek was born in Chicago on February 12th 1939 and after meeting Jim Morrison on Venice Beach in 1965 he rose to prominence with The Doors, one of the most notorious rock bands of their time, selling in excess of 100 million albums.
In the aftermath of Morrison’s death in 1971, Manzarek went on to become a novelist and grammy winning recording artist in his own right. He also played with luminaries such as Iggy Pop and Echo & The Bunnymen.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy, son Pablo and 2 brothers Rick and James. His family have requested that instead of sending flowers, his fans make a donation in memory of him to Standup2cancer.org
